Hybrid Pumpkin

a new pumpkin

This year, we planted a row of Jarrahdale pumpkins. However, in that row we found:

  • 3 yellow, bumpy squash plants
  • 7 Jarrahdale pumpkin plants
  • 1 unknown pumpkin plant

After, much head scratching, we realized that the seeds we planted must have been cross pollinated with yellow squash (giving us an F1 new variety).

Here’s the fun part…

We will be saving the seeds from the “unknown pumpkin” to see if we can replicate this pumpkin again next year. If we are able to do that, we will repeat this process for several seasons. If we can successfully do this, we will be able to apply to have our NEW variety registered with the USDA.

So, we need your help! Assuming all goes well, what would you name this giant, bumpy pumpkin?
